This picturesque valley is located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, India, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Spread over 87.5 square kilometers, the Valley of Flowers is a paradise for nature lovers, adventure enthusiasts, and spiritual seekers alike.
The Valley is a part of the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve, which is one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world. It’s home to several rare and endangered species of plants and animals, some of the rare species that are found here include the Himalayan musk deer, the Asiatic black bear, and the snow leopard.
This mystical place is known to be one of the most important and notable locations of mythology. In Hindu mythology, Lord Hanuman found the Sanjeevani herb to revive Lakshman. The valley remained until discovered by a British mountaineer, Frank S. Smythe in 1931. The Valley is also home to the indigenous Bhotiya community, who have been living here for centuries. They are known for their excellent craftsmanship in making woolen clothes, carpets, and wooden artifacts. They also have a unique cuisine, which includes dishes like gahat ki daal, and bhatt ki churkani.
To reach the Valley of Flowers, one has to undertake a trek of around 16 km from Govindghat, spread over a few days. The trek starts from Govindghat, passing through beautiful forests of oak and pine, along with several streams and waterfalls. The trail is well-defined and marked. As you ascend higher, the scenery becomes more breathtaking. The trail is dotted with several varieties of flowers, including Himalayan blue poppies, primulas, and orchids.
The Valley of Flowers is known for its vast meadows of colorful flowers, which are in full bloom during the months of July to September. The valley is surrounded by towering snow-clad peaks, which add to its stunning beauty. After completing the trek to the Valley of Flowers, one can also visit Hemkund Sahib, which is located nearby.
Hemkund Sahib is a Sikh shrine, which is considered to be one of the holiest places in India. The shrine is situated at an altitude of 4,329 meters above sea level and can be reached by undertaking a steep trek of around 6 km from Ghangria (base camp after Govindghat).
