The magical town of Chakrata is an offbeat Himalayan destination accessible from Delhi or located at a distance of 90 km from Dehradun in the state of Uttarakhand. Located at an altitude of 7000 feet, the mesmerizing town of Chakrata offers breathtaking views of multiple Himalayan ranges. Surrounded by thick deodar forests, blessed with beautiful Himalayan birds, winding roads, frozen lakes in winter, waterfalls, picturesque sceneries, green meadows, vast grasslands, and the fresh air of Chakrata makes it an amazing destination for a short and sweet weekend getaway.

Chakrata is a cantonment town, and it was developed by British Rulers to be mostly used as a summer retreat for the high level executives of East India Company. Chakrata is also a part of Jaunsar-Bawar region which is inhabited by Jaunsari Tribe.

Tiger Falls is one of the mightiest waterfalls in Uttarakhand which falls from a 312 feet high cliff with a roaring sound, and ultimately making a beautiful emerald green crystal clear water pool. It’s a very refreshing and close-to-nature experience to visit Tiger Falls. You are allowed to take a bath in the pool formed by waterfalls. There is a very short trek (almost 1 km) which leads us to Tiger Falls.
What are your thoughts on taking a laid-back village walk in Chakrata? We get to witness the traditional Jaunsari houses, witness the slow village life, and get lost in the simple beauty. The purpose of this activity is to allow people just to deviate a bit from the touristy Chakrata itineraries and try something different. Village Walk also gives an opportunity to click some unique pictures of traditional houses and little more.
Chilmiri Plateau, also known as Chirmiri Neck, offers the most breathtaking sunset and sunrise in Chakrata. It’s a very vast plateau surrounded by thick lush green deodar forests. Would you believe if we tell you that Chilmiri Plateau is actually located on the top of a mountain peak, which is one of the highest peaks in Chakrata? Chilmiri neck also offers magnificent views of a few famous mountain peaks such as Bandarpoonch, Rohini, and Swarg Peaks.
Moila Bugyal is a beautiful meadow that surprises visitors with lovely attractions. It’s home to the astonishing limestone cave known as Budher Cave, a beautiful wooden temple named Pari ka Mandir and a Natural Water Lake. Moila Bugyal area can be navigated by doing a 6 km trek that starts from Lokhandi and surprises people with beautiful forest areas and meadows. It was named after a German explorer who discovered this area.
Pari ka Mandir is another beautiful attraction that can be visited during Moila Bugyal Trek. Set amidst the beautiful meadows, it’s a small wooden temple with traditional pahadi architecture. It’s a mythological temple and as per locals, only pariyan (fairies) or highly proven priests can worship here.
Budher Cave falls nearby Moila Top. It’s a wondrous limestone cave that is believed to be built by Pandavas during their exile period. It has brilliant stalagmite and stalactite formations. The cave is 150 meters long, having a very narrow entrance but becomes pretty huge once you navigate through it. It’s a perfect caving opportunity in the Himalayas for adrenaline junkies.
Natural Water Lake is another attraction that can be witnessed and enjoyed while trekking the Moila Bugyal area. The lake becomes like icing on the cake while enjoying the beautiful meadows and the forest area.
Chakrata Market is a beautiful pahadi market, which must be visited if we are in Chakrata. We will enjoy visiting some quaint shops, have a look at unique souvenirs, buy some beans, try some local food, and have chai at a “chai ki tapri”.
